How to get DTS/DD5.1 over HDMI from an ATI HD card Print E-mail

ImageIf you have a Radeon 3600/3650 and simply cannot get your reciever to recognize DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1 sound from the HDMI cable, on Windows XP (x64) I probably have the solution for you. I sincerely hope this article can spare some indivuals the trials I have been though regarding this mystery.

You have installed the newest ATI Catalyst drivers (regardless of the make of your card), 8.8 currently. That should be it, right? Unfortunately ATI forgot to include proper drivers for the audio capabilities of your card. An ATI HD sound device will show up and you will be able to hear stereo (or Pro Logic II) on your reciever, but it will simply not transfer Dolby Digital or DTS over SPDIF through HDMI.

Well, through a lot of searching I discovered that what was needed was Realtek HDMI drivers (an additional set of drivers to install after the Catalyst drivers). I first tried the 2.03 version, but only after installing the 1.97 version did my audio device change to Realtek HDA HDMI Out and I was able to get proper digital surround on my reciever. Google these drivers.

The best player/filter combo I have found is Media Player Classic and AC3Filter (audio wise). AC3Filter setup: In the "Main" tab check the "Use SPDIF" box in main under (AS IS/48000/PCM 24Bit) and in the "SPDIF" tab check AC3, DTS and MPEG under SPDIFF passthrough. Under the "System" tab check all boxes in "Use AC3Filer for". You're set - unmodified digital multichannel sound from your PC to your reciever.

I have the exact same setup. I successfully achieved 5.1 for mkv movies thanks to the ac3filter but when playing surround sound games it is only stereo. :?

I don't know much about sound from games, but I could image that most (or all?) games only support local 5.1 sound, not any format transported over SPDIF to an external reciever.
But if I want to play a game I put headphones on anyway :)
